Blurred Reminisce: Oil Painting

Blurred Reminisce, Oil on raw canvas, 2019

The content of my work revolves around the reminisce of my old grandma’s home, where we used to gather every Friday. As time passed, these family gatherings decreased, and those faces which were once clear became a blurred reminiscence. Nostalgic memories are windows to the desire to feel a sense of belonging, sentimentality, and security. Blurred Reminisce is a series of oil paintings extracted from portrait photographs of essential family members taken at my grandma’s house in the early 90s. These portraits capture the emotions during an era that was perceived as simple. Within these memories of facial blurs, there is always something in each of them that is crystal clear and stands out. Memory can be easily lost as a material trace. By fearing loss and obliteration, painting them makes them re-exist physically in the present and makes it comforting to hold on to as we open up to future experiences.
